About the voices
Both voices are Ethiopian Amharic (am-ET), generated by Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. Punctuation shapes the reading, so ። and ፣ give you sentence and clause breaks.
Text is sent to Google to be spoken, and the audio is not stored once you leave the page — download it if you want to keep it.
Common questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. There is no account and no watermark. Each request can be up to 2,000 characters, roughly a page of text; for something longer, read it out in parts.
- Can I download the audio?
- Yes. Once the audio is ready, the download button beside the player saves it as an MP3 that plays on any phone or computer, ready for a video, a lesson or a voice message.
- Is this an AI voice?
- Yes. Nobody records your text: the voice is synthesised by Google Cloud's text-to-speech engine from its two Ethiopian Amharic voices, called Almaz (female) and Dawit (male) here.
- I can't type in Amharic. What do I do?
- Use the Amharic keyboard: type the sound in English letters, such as selam, and it writes ሰላም. Then copy the result back here.
