Common questions
- How do I use it as an Amharic font generator?
- Type or paste your text in the box at the top and it appears in all 24 fonts at once. Pick a colour, then on the font you like either copy the text, save it as a picture with the share button, or download the font itself.
- Why does the font disappear when I paste my text somewhere else?
- Copying takes the letters, not the look. Whoever reads it sees your words in whatever Amharic font their own phone or computer has. To keep the style, share it as a picture (the share button makes a PNG ready for Telegram, Facebook or Instagram), or install the font where you are working.
- How do I install an Amharic font on my computer?
- Download it with the arrow button; it saves as a .ttf file. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Install. On a Mac, double-click it and press Install Font. It then shows up in the font list of Word, PowerPoint and most other programs.
- Can I use these fonts on my phone?
- Most phones do not let you add a font for every app. The simple route on a phone is the picture: style your text here and save it with the share button.
- Are the fonts free for commercial work?
- Yes. Every font here is released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows personal and commercial use, including logos, print and video. Keep the credit with the font and don't sell the font file itself; the licence links above have the details.
- I can’t type in Amharic. What do I do?
- Switch on Phonetic typing above and type the sound in English letters: selam becomes ሰላም. The Amharic keyboard explains the spelling rules.
